Zayn to get zoned out in rumoured One Direction reunion by Shawn Mendes?

By Bryan Durham - August 30, 2019

This is probably the craziest rumour you’re going to hear all day today: One Direction may be reuniting and Zayn Malik’s probably going to be replaced by Shawn Mendes.

If you’re still alive after that line played through in your head, know that while we’re still stuck in that will they-won’t they mode, the chances of this fantasy coming true are pretty high.

And here’s why. Harry Styles, a successful solo star at this point, is very open to the idea of a 1D reunion. He said as much in a recent interview. Zayn returning for a reunion is still off the books at this point, but you never know.

Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan boast of successful careers as well, but Liam (at least, bless his soul) has admitted recently that a reunion is “inevitable”.

When? Well, that remains to be seen. But Zayn being replaced by Shawn? How did that buzz start? So here’s the thing. Rumours started swirling since 2016. That’s when the world got to know that Shawn and Niall are BFFs in real life.

Twitter wanted them to get into a studio for a collaboration which has been on their minds and in January this year, for a brief moment in time, it seemed like it might just happen. But we’re close to the end of 2019 and it’s still up in the air.

But think about it. This could actually happen if the powers that be, will it. 1D is signed to Syco, which is signed to Columbia Records, which comes under the Sony Music Entertainment umbrella. Shawn’s ‘Senorita’ collaborator and (possibly) real-life love Camila Cabello is signed to Syco/Epic (both come under SME). Would Shawn switch from Republic/Universal Music Group at some point? If that happens, imagine the chart juggernaut this would be.

So yeah, the possibility of the stars aligning and the universe conspiring to make this happen are very real.

Watch this space to see if anything changes. We’ll be there with all the updates.
