‘What more could I ask for?’

Martin Garrix is a name you’re going to hear a lot in the next two days or so. Amid loud squeals, no less. In India, at least at two festival venues. The No. 1 ranked DJ in the world (twice in two years and he’s only 21 to boot!) and one of the hottest-selling producers this year is headlining both SUNBURN Festival in Pune and the first edition of TimeOut72 in Goa. We picked his brain and here’s what he shared…

India really loves you. You’re headlining two big music festivals. Which one has you more excited?
I’m equally excited for the both of them, really! Two opportunities for me to create shows in front of many of my fans, what more could I ask for?

You’re ranked as the number 1 DJ second year in a row and you’re only 21. How does that make you feel, having got fame pretty quicker than most?
It’s a crazy feeling! I’m just really thankful for all the support.

Who among the older producers do you admire the most?
So many! Tiësto inspired me to start listening to electronic music, but I also really admire David Guetta, for example.

What really went down with Ellie Goulding not making it to the final cut of ‘So Far Away’ after being the original choice?
It’s a management thing but I don’t want to go into details. It’s a pity, but I think the track turned out great. I’m really happy with the result. And nothing against Ellie, I think she’s an amazing artist.

What’s your fav pizza topping?
Cheese, truffle, and mushrooms. It’s a golden combination.

Now that you’ve turned 21, are you allowed to drink at public places?
In most countries, yes.

What’s your fav venue to play at?
That’s a question I really can’t answer since I have played at so many amazing venues. Every show has its own atmosphere and I’m just really thankful that I get to play them.
