The most streamed Indian Indie artists on Spotify? There are a few surprises…
By Bryan Durham - December 2, 2020
It’s that time of the year when Spotify shares WRAPPED, which is “all about discovering everything that soundtracked people’s lives in the year gone by, and celebrating the sounds and voices they found love for.”
As part of the campaign, the streaming giant has unveiled the top artists, albums, songs, playlists and podcasts that defined how Indians listened to and discovered audio in 2020, despite a world under lockdown.
It should come as no surprise to anyone listening to Indian indie music in 2020 that Prateek Kuhad and Ritviz continue to rule the roost in streaming, at least when it comes to Spotify.
The streaming giant exclusively shared data with bandook about the most streamed Indian indie artists in India and abroad and while it threw up expected names, we did run into quite a few unexpected ones, too.

Prateek is numero uno (with Ritviz following) when it comes to indie artists streamed abroad, while Ritviz takes top spot in the ‘most streamed in India’ list.

Nucleya, Zaeden and The Local Train are the only other names common to both lists.

What is quite surprising, though, is Shannon K (Kumar Sanu’s daughter) slowly and steadily growing a global audience in the indie space despite having fewer releases than almost every other name in the lists.

Another surprise in the ‘most streamed indie artist abroad’ list is Emiway Bantai, who, one would expect to have a largely Indian in India listening base.

It is also interesting to note that Anuv Jain’s Baarishein was the fifth most shared track on Instagram and the 4th most shared track on WhatsApp this year, according to Spotify’s data.
