The Kakar twins’ debut single ‘Sudhar Ja’ is personal, but relatable

Here’s the first look at Sukriti and Prakriti Kakar in the video

With their latest single, Sudhar Ja, Bollywood’s ‘Singing Twins’ Sukriti and Prakriti Kakar speak to the demographic they make music for: the youth. Betrayal in love isn’t just a personal experience, it’s also a universal (and thereby, relatable one).

The Kakar twins’ debut single ‘Sudhar Ja’ is personal, but relatable

Their new single — their first non-film single together (how did anyone not think of this before?) — sees them take an entire gamut of emotions and their personal experiences and turn it into a celebratory anthem of sorts.

In Sudhar Ja, Sukriti and Prakriti tell the boys they have had enough and won’t take their abuse anymore and they do so in style.

Between them, the girls have a who’s who list of hits — Sukriti for Kar Gayi Chull (Kapoor & Sons), Neend Churayi (Golmaal Again) and Pehli Baar (Dil Dhadakne Do) among others. Prakriti has to her credit, hit numbers such as Subah Subah (Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety), Hawa Hawa (Mubarakan) and Hard Hard (Batti Gul Meter Chalu).

And so, their first non-film outing is special and understandably so, the twins are excited for Sudhar Ja. Why? Because they’ve been active playback singers since 2015. This will be the first instance that they’ve composed the music with production by Abhijit Vaghani and lyrics by Kunaal Vermaa.

Shot by Robby Singh, the video features the two sisters in an avatar representing today’s modern woman who will not take lying, cheating and being two-timed lightly anymore.

Says Sukriti, “This song got made very organically. I got a random idea and was humming it casually and that’s how the tune was created. I wanted it to reflect my experiences of growing up years, heartaches and disappointments and issues about dealing with boys.”

Adds Prakriti, “Although it is based on our personal experiences of growing up years, we also wanted it to be very relatable. The first test we passed was when the two boys who feature in the video said that they had been there. Subsequently, we showed it to some of our male friends and they also said the same thing.

Sukriti elaborates, “Athough the song is from a girl’s perspective, we were very sure we wanted boys to enjoy the song too.” Says Prakriti, “We are very happy to have done playback singing since last few years but in
playback singing, we are constantly told to sound a certain way, to match our voice to the actress who will be singing the song on the screen. Here we could express ourselves freely.”

Concludes Prakriti, “We are happy that through this video, people will know the face behind the voice.”
Further, the twins recall funny things that happened while shooting the song in Dubai. “Like in a Hindi film, we both forgot our choreography steps at the same time, we both dropped our earrings at the same time, we both sneezed at the same time. It was hilarious for all of us while shooting.”

Prakriti adds, “Shooting the song on the first day was very smooth. We wasted a lot of time. The second day we were racing against time to complete the shoot. We had to cancel out flight and book the next flight so that we could complete the shoot of the song the same day. Both of us were slated to perform a gig in Mumbai in the afternoon the next day. We did not get any sleep but we somehow managed to reach in time for our performance.”
Sudhar Ja releases on February 21.
