Taylor Swift, Madonna, PC in YouGov’s Most Admired list
By Bryan Durham - July 23, 2019
YouGov released its annual survey that lists the Most Admired People globally and it was found that actors, businessmen and political leaders scored the highest.
At least three names in the Top 20 list for women belong to musicians — Peng Liyuan (happens to be the Chinese First Lady as well), Taylor Swift and Madonna (in that order). If you consider that Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan have both sung for films, that number goes up to five. Factor in that actor Andy Lau also happens to be Cantopop royalty and that actor Priyanka Chopra has a few singles out, you have seven people out of 40 who are the most admired musicians in the world.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it to the men’s list and is the highest ranked Indian on the list, coming in at #6. Only three other Indian men made it to the men’s Top 20 (all are actors): Amitabh Bachchan (#12), Shah Rukh Khan (#16) and Salman Khan (#18).
If you narrow down the list to Indian musicians admired worldwide, Lata Mangeshkar becomes the only bonafide singer on the list.
People from across 41 countries were polled, asking them simply: “Thinking about people alive in the world today, which [man or woman] do you most admire?” These nominations were then used to compile a list of the 20 men and 20 women who received the most nominations and were nominated in at least four countries.
A month later, two more questions were asked: ‘Who do you truly admire?’ and ‘Who do you MOST admire?’ with each respondent only being able to pick one. A combined percentage of admiration was then compiled o reach the final figure.
