Singer Shilpa Rao on how she feels women can ‘Press For Progress’ this Women’s Day

By Bandook - March 8, 2018

A meeting with Shilpa Rao earlier today had us asking her, among other things, what she made of the theme for International Women’s Day today (March 8).

The theme, ‘Press For Progress’ comes from a strong call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity. A strong call to #PressforProgress. A strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender-inclusive.

Shilpa says that most of the time, the problem stems from the fact that “Women themselves don’t know they’re in a bad place or feel it’s okay to be treated in that manner.”

When asked how that can change, she said, “You would get respect if you respect you own self. It doesn’t come by telling someone that you’ve done something. It just comes by having self-respect.That’s the difference between being proud, being a show-off and being self-respectful. If you can respect yourself and own your space and be able to say, ‘This is not how how you’re going to treat me or talk to me’, I think that will be one step ahead for everyone.”

Well put. What say?
