REVIEW: ‘Urvashi’ by Yo Yo Honey Singh is unambitious and unimaginative

Where has the ‘real’ Yo Yo Honey Singh gone?

SINGLE: Urvashi
MUSIC/LYRICS/ SUNG BY: Yo Yo Honey Singh
ADDL LYRICS: Singhsta
STARRING: Shahid Kapoor, Kiara Advani
VIDEO DIRECTED BY: DirectorGifty

The fire’s gone out of Yo Yo Honey Singh. The rapper/music-producer who once ruled Bollywood and the non-film music space is a pale shadow of his former self. The Shahid Kapoor-Kiara Advani music video, Urvashi helmed by DirectorGifty, proves just that.

A re-creation of the AR Rahman hit from Humse Hai Muqabala, it made us go back to the original and wonder what the point of the whole re-visiting was. And the point of this was not to belittle YYHS (the man has done several competent, successful, well-loved re-creations), but to wonder why. Why could he not put his own unique spin on an ARR classic?

Should’ve been smooth sailing, given that Yo Yo Honey Singh’s several “comebacks” in both the Bollywood and “independent” (read: non-film) space are mostly re-created, remixed versions of tried-and-tested hits. But we found ourselves sorely disappointed.

Is it just the completely derivative, shamelessly overdone sets, the inanely outlandish plot, the unambitious, unimaginative music production and lazy lyric-writing, or is there more to blame here?

Also, this feels more like a product/service placement vehicle than anything else. Don’t miss the over-the-top Big Boy Toys (BBT), Hungama and BOAT Audio products in-your-face.

The only reason you like a video like this is because you’re a fan of YYHS, Shahid or Kiara. Or because you’re curious AF. Yes, money has been spent to make this look lavish. But is that enough to make us fall in love with it as much as we did with the original (despite the lyrics!)?

If you ask us, we’re more sold on the Benny Dayal re-creation called ‘Project Urvasi)
