REVIEW: ‘Tera Shehar’ sears with its words, doesn’t connect with visuals

Ever-afters are unpredictable affairs. Truth be told, unfinished love stories are less about the destination and more about the journey. It’s easy enough to get waylaid by detours.
We see it in Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon and we see it in Tum Ho To Lagta Hai and we see it in Tera Shehar. Hesitations and procrastinations in saying “those three words” serve as conflict points in the story.
But here’s the problem with Tera Shehar. It has none of the lightness of being of Main Rahoon… or the devastating heft of Tum Ho To Lagta Hai.
The reason I compare these three videos is because they all deal with longing and loss in some way with twists and what-ifs lingering about and feature music by Amaal Mallik.
The trouble is, it doesn’t all come together for Tera Shehar as effortlessly as it does for the other two tracks.
Himansh comes across as a friendzoned “gentleman” who never loses his good streak despite the anger and the spite in the verse.
Mohd Kalam’s harkats and subtle vocal inflections feel like they have some experience behind them and that’s rare for a newcomer, but he’s unable to convey the range and pain and anguish and reliability in Manoj Muntashir’s evocative words.
Amaal’s music for this track is best enjoyed without visuals (sorry, Shabby!) in this case. It feels largely organic, something our ears aren’t as accustomed to hearing these days. The use of dholak makes the sound feel a little dated, is all.
Also, the audio makes the argument that “angry love” is the emotion we’re looking for. Instead, what we get in the video is a friendzoned guy who might just get his due.>
