Nikhita Gandhi on working with Arko for the first time with Aleya
By Bryan Durham - August 13, 2019
Nikhita Gandhi has notched another first to her name. This one has her singing for Arko Pravo Mukherjee for the first time for a Bengali film called Shantilal O Projapoti Rohoshyo, starring Ritwick Chakraborty and Paoli Dam.
We reached out to Nikhita for a quick Q&A on the song. Excerpts…
Give us a quick gist of what the song is about, for those of us who love how this song sounds, but don’t know Bengali.
Aleya, in a nutshell represents a lot of unrest and unresolved feelings where the subject is trying to find peace and get somewhere, but is constantly being mislead and not able to achieve closure. The first line of the song: “the closer I get, the further away I am” very tastefully and simplistically sets the theme of the song. I’m sure Pratim da ( who wrote the song and shot the film) will have a better insight on the song! But this is what I take from it!
Which language do you enjoy singing in, more: Bengali or Hindi?
Singing in Bangla, of course, gives me a sense of home. It is definitely special for me. Bangla songs are so rich in melody and just gorgeous, it really gives me inexplicable joy to sing some of the tunes I’ve gotten to sing!
Any takeaways from working for the first time with Arko?
He is just wonderful. Very calm and open minded in the recordings. He knows exactly what he wants but he also gives the singer a lot of room to express and improvise!>
