Neeti Mohan’s ‘Kithe Reh Gaya’ is a re-creation of ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan’?!

And in case you didn’t know this, Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan is a re-creation of a popular Punjabi folk song Sanu Nehar Wale Pul Te Bula Ke.

At this point in time, nothing surprises us. Especially when it comes to lately discovered re-creations. Produced by T-Series, Neeti Mohan’s new single Kithe Reh Gaya was launched today on YouTube and the first thought that popped into our head, a minute and a half in, was… doesn’t this track sound a lot like Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan?

Well, that’s because Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan itself is a re-creation as it turns out! Of what you, ask? Well, the source seems to be a popular Punjabi folk song called Sanu Nehar Wale Pul Te Bula Ke. As far as we can tell, the earliest version was by the legendary Noor Jehan.

The song would make it to a Punjabi film in India called Pind Di Kudi before the song in Roy by the Meet Bros.

But now that we’re all caught up, let’s get back to the Neeti Mohan single. Re-composed by Abhijit Vaghani, with lyrics by Kumaar, the wordsmith behind Chitttiyaan Kalaiyaan, it’s a very likeable re-creation that you cannot help but hum along to.

That probably is because Neeti Mohan has a very pleasing screen presence along with a great voice.

A press release sent out by T-Series describes the single as “a re-creation of an old folk song re-composed” but it doesn’t say what re-creation.

You’re expected to know and while we do agree that the new rendition is “more upbeat and trendy” and for “a new-age audience”, we’re a little bummed about it being a re-creation. At the same time, we are glad that it works, but find it weird that the starting of the four-minute video felt like an afterthought. Watch the video and you’ll know why.

In any case, here’s what Neeti had to say about her new single, “The song is very special and its has shaped up really well. Abhijit has reworked on the tune and it sounds amazing with the new lyrics by Kumaar. Kithe Reh Gaya is a recreation of a popular folk song and has been shot in a Punjabi setup and I have never danced in a video like this. The song is about a girl, who is ready for her ring ceremony and the boy is about to arrive and it’s a celebration time for entire family. It’s a fun video.”
