Guru Randhawa turns mentor to on-the-rise singer Barbie Mann

Guru Randhawa has proved his mettle with the success of tracks in Bollywood as well as Punjabi pop, charting a journey from a small town to becoming one of the most viewed singers on YouTube.

To that end, he has also been part of big-time music collaborations with international artists, but this would be the first time he turns mentor (of sorts) to Punjabi singer Barbie Mann, who has Punjabi pop songs Akhiyan, Meri Saheliyaan and Ajj Kal Ve (with Sidhu Moosewala) to her name.

It’s one of those rare occasions where Guru has written the lyrics for the single and composed it (with production by Vee), but won’t feature in the video with Barbie but simply introduce her.

And so, the song Teri Gali, will feature former Bigg Boss finalist Asim Riaz opposite the singer in a story about unrequited love. Directed by Yaadu Brar, the video celebrates a love that didn’t reach fruition, thanks to the Partition. Shot in Nabha and Patiala in Punjab, the video features Asim for the first time opposite the singer.

While Barbie says her collaboration with Guru was “natural” and “organic”, she also adds, “When we first met, we ended up sharing our musical aspirations and spent a lot of time listening to my tracks and voice. During this time, he decided to compose a song for my voice.  This song has a bit of an old-school vibe and it is one of the best experiences of life as we recorded it in about one hour.  It’s a very special song for me as it is different from the rest of the songs I have done till now.”

She continues, “With Asim Sir featuring in it, the whole project has become very special for me.”

For his part, Guru says he’s proud to introduce Barbie and feels the onus of support now rests on the audience. ” When she will become a superstar in coming years, you all can say you all have made her. I’ve written the song and her voice does complete justice to it.  I’m sure the audience will enjoy her voice as much as I did.”
