David Bowie’s Starman ‘demo tape’ up for auciton

The first recording of David Bowie’s Starman, which is a demo tape dating back to 1971, is going up for auction. The demo tape is almost 50 years old.

The tape was in the possession of Kevin Hutchinson, a friend of guitarist Mick Ronson, who features on the tape as Bowie tells him he had not finished the song and tried to end the recording.

Kevin was given the song by Mick, so he could learn the song, in 1971. Kevin told the BBC, “I remember listening to it and thinking, ‘This is OK’. I didn’t think, ‘This is fantastic’. At 16, you’re not totally impressed, nothing impresses you.
