‘Chonch Ladiyan’ singer Jazim Sharma on new ghazal: I wanted to break the clutter

Ghazal singer Jaspreet ‘Jazim’ Sharma, the voice behind Manmarziyaan’s Chonch Ladiyan and Grey Walaa Shade, is back. This time, it’s with Meri Baaton Ne, an independent single on Indie Music Label.
Jazim, known as Shehzada-e-Ghazal since his Sa Re Ga Ma Pa (2012) days, made it big in Bollywood with Manmarziyaan.
The video for Meri Baaton Ne dropped earlier today and feels distinctly Bengali. The story revolves around a middle-class music teacher’s daughter, who falls in love with her father’s student. Her father doesn’t approve of their relationship and the student decides to leave her and the city overnight. The girl feels cheated and marries as per her father’s wishes. What happens after a few years pass and what destiny holds in store for them, is what the video is about.
When asked why the look and feel was distinctly Bengali, Naushad Khan, MD – Indie Music Label said, “The idea of the video was to go retro and to keep it a little different visually, stylistically.”
At a time when party tracks, even in the independent space is the norm, IML has bucked the trend and released a soulful ghazal.
Says Khan of pushing the genre, “Ghazal is a genre which is loved by all but is not released frequently, so we decided to go ahead with Meri Baaton Ne.”
It’s a sentiment shared by Jazim. He says, “Meri Baaton Ne is a song very close to my heart. I wanted to break from the clutter and give the audience something different. The song has come out beautifully and credit goes to our music composer Sundeep Gosswami and Naveen Tyagi who has written such lovely lyrics. I hope the listeners enjoy the track as much as we did while making it.”
