Bollywood music legend Khayyam passes away at 93

Legendary composer Mohammed Zahur ‘Khayyam’ Hashmi is no more. Best known for his music in Bollywood classics like Kabhi Kabhie (1972) and Umrao Jaan (1981) to name a few, he had a career spanning over four decades. In recognition of his illustrious career, he was also awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour.
Khayyam saab, as he was referred to, was 93 when he passed after a long battle for life in the ICU of a Mumbai hospital. He breathed his last at 9.30 pm last night and cardiac arrest was declared as the cause of death.
Admitted after being diagnosed for lung infection, he had reportedly been in a critical condition since his admission. According to reports, ghazal singer Talat Aziz had been caring for the veteran composer and his wife Jagjit Kaur during his final days.
The spokesperson for his trust said that his last rites (performed with full state honour) would be held later this afternoon.
